Summary: This study investigates the use of gypsum from flue gas desulfurization (FGDG) as an input in the treatment of leachate, an effluent generated by the combustion of municipal solid waste in landfills. A bibliometric analysis was conducted to map the application of FGDG in effluent treatment. This revealed the lack of studies applied solely to leachate and indicated a new scientific gap to be filled. Subsequently, laboratory experiments were conducted to identify the main parameters that influence the interaction between FGDG and leachate. The parameters analyzed were color, turbidity, pH, ammonia nitrogen, COD, chlorides, and sulfates, aiming to explore the influence of FGDG and provide support for future research. The results showed that FGDG showed promising performance, promoting an increase in pH and a significant reduction in color and turbidity, with potential effects on the removal of undesirable compounds. Characterization of FGDG using X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence reinforces its potential as an alkalizing agent and indicates that it can act as a coagulant, precipitant, and adsorbent. The study concluded that FGDG is a chemical input with potential for use in leachate treatment, paving the way for a new technological approach based on the valorization of industrial waste.
