Summary: The aim of this study was to assess the environmental impact of greenhouse gas
(GHG) emissions resulting from Samarco Mineração activities, as well as to determine
the capacity to absorb these gases through reforestation. Calculating carbon
sequestration in a planting system involves various factors and can be done using
different approaches depending on the type of plantation, soil conditions, plant life
cycle, and others. Data on GHG emissions for the base year of 2022 are presented,
taken from Samarco's corporate inventory. It summarizes emissions of CO2 (carbon
dioxide), CH4 (methane), N2O (nitrous oxide), and SF6 (sulfur hexafluoride) gases by
scope. The company recorded a total emission of 1,025,654.99 tCO2e in 2022. To
compensate for these GHG emissions through forest sequestration, a pilot model
proposing seven planting scenarios was developed, varying between spacings and
species. Tree species used included Pinus, Eucalyptus, and native species from the
Atlantic Forest. The results show a significant disparity between total emissions and
the carbon sequestration capacity of planting areas. Based on the results, it is
concluded that formulating strategies to address climate change requires collaborative
approaches from Samarco. It is essential to implement tactics to reduce GHG
emissions and mitigate these emissions through compensatory activities, such as tree
planting in the case studied.
