Summary: Peripheral devices for Portable Electronic Devices (PED), such as chargers, are often
overlooked in electronic equipment waste management and disposal policies, and are
frequently discarded improperly with household waste or hoarded in drawers. In this
regard, there is a research gap in the lack of studies on the effects of standardizing
PED peripherals as a strategy to anticipate the generation of electronic waste (EEE).
The objective of this research was to identify and systematize elements influencing the
standardization of PED chargers in the PESTEL categories (political, economic, social,
technological, environmental, and legal), as one of the strategies for non-generation
and reduction of EEE. The methodology used was a systematic literature review
associated with PESTEL analysis. The research timeframe extended from 2009 (the
year of the publication of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the
European Union and mobile phone manufacturers) to 2023 (the year of the publication
of the European Union directive mandating the use of the USB Type-C standard for
connectors in portable electro-electronic devices in the European market). In total, 19
discussion elements were identified that directly influence the standardization of PED
chargers. The primary contribution of this research was to gather data on the
standardization of PEDs and accessories as a strategy for anticipating waste
generation, thereby seeking alternatives to reduce the production and consump.
