Summary: The activity of ship recycling is gaining notoriety due to the increasing number of
decommissioning projects during the last few years. Despite recovering a large part
of the ship, which is composed of steel, the presence of hazardous waste and the
risk of accidents are aspects that must be managed. Therefore, there is a great
challenge in implementing sustainable practices in a sustainable supply chain for
ship recycling. This research aims to verify the current stage of sustainable practices
in the supply chain of ship recycling being developed in Brazil. Through a systematic
literature review, were identified collaborative practices, managerial practices, and
social practices. Then, exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis
were applied to investigate the relationships among the identified sustainable
practices. The results reveal a strong relationship between collaborative practices
and managerial practices, which is translated into the effort to develop a national
regulation, as well as the collaboration between stakeholders and commitment of top
management as a first sign in making the supply chain of ship recycling adequate to
the requirements of international standards and guidelines. Furthermore, this
research exhibited a negative relationship between managerial practices and social
practices, evidencing that the prematurity of the supply chain of ship recycling in
Brazil has not yet allowed a strong interaction between these practices. Thus, this
study provides an overview of the sustainable practices of the supply chain of ship
recycling in Brazil, helping in the development of strategies and in the stakeholders`
decision making about the sustainable practices that require more attention. This
research contributes to the limited literature regarding studies that address
sustainable supply chain management in the context of developing countries.
Concomitantly, it represents a preliminary effort in identifying and analyzing the
sustainability practices of the supply chain of ship recycling.
