Summary: The exponential increase in greenhouse gas emissions after the beginning of the industrial era has had a considerable impact on human systems on all continents in the world. As a result, agreements between nations have been signed, as an example, the Paris Agreement, in which countries were committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from 2020. Many authors
claim that international standards can be used as tools to help implement the 2020 Global Climate Action Agenda for sustainable development. So, the ISO 14001 standard proposes an environmental management system and the ways to improve it due to all the environmental aspects of an organization. The ISO 50001, on the other hand, defines the requirements for implementing an energy management system, working on a continuous improvement methodology with only one environmental aspect, but one of the most relevant one nowadays, which is the use and consumption of energy. Therefore, organizations that wish to improve their environmental performance and image in the market are often faced with the decision of which standard to apply, considering that both require high efforts and investments. In this way, the objective of this work is to define a method that promotes greater impact on the environmental performance of an organization, based on the ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 standards. Then, it was necessary to carry out a vast theoretical review, define a questionnaire and apply it, to then define the referenced method and apply it. Many conclusions and considerations were reached at the end, such as the constatation that the energy management methodology proposed in ISO 50001 contains more specific steps aimed at data collection and analysis, definition of indicators and targets and a baseline to compare performance in relation to the initial state. In addition to other practices, such as energy review and the project phase for improvements that will only take place through investments.
