Summary: The growing worldwide concern about environmental pollution has influenced the formulation of public policies to encourage the generation and use of non-conventional renewable energy sources. However, there are still some problems related to its acquisition and, in this context, in order to create an environment conducive to the development and expansion of the use of these energy sources, it is necessary to increase the amount of investments aimed at technological improvement and cost reduction, besides promote an adequate regulatory environment. This study has the aim to present and analyze the main regulatory changes and incentive public policies for non-conventional renewable sources in two countries of South America (Brazil and Chile). Therefore, the methodology used was based on a bibliographical and documentary research, as well as a comparative between the studied countries. The first analyzes show that in these countries, the generation of electricity through nonconventional renewable energy sources has a complementary role (operational flexibility) and diversification of the electric energy matrix. However, it must be taken into account the problems arising from the lack of infrastructure of the electric power transmission segment, in some cases, both in Brazil and Chile, the issue of intermittence, among others.
