Summary: The concern with the community of Morro do Atalaia, Paul Quarter, Vila Velha-ES,
WHERE chemical storage tanks were installed was a the purpose of this research. It is
noticed that, with business growth in urban areas, damages risks and environmental
impacts, as well population welfare, should be relevant for the definition of the location
of such deposits. Therefore, understanding the risk and the degree of awareness of
the population submitted to these circumstances is a relevant concern. This study
aims to evaluate the perception of the residents of the community about the risks to
which they are exposed, due to the installation of chemical deposits. Firstly, the
research is composed of a historical geographic and demographic study of the
community aiming to characterize the business to be studied as well as the possible
environmental consequences of it, through documentary research. It adopts as
methodology the qualitative field research, which aims to describe the risk perception
of the residents, subjects of the investigation, valuing personal perceptions and
seeking to understand the point of view of those involved. The methodological
procedure used was the application of structured questionnaires organized into two
groups: socioeconomic characterization and specific framework of risk perception
analysis, submitted to statistical treatment, chi-square test. Throughout the work, the
results of the cross-referencing of risk perception with the variables level of schooling,
work condition, income, time residing in the neighborhood and gender are presented.
As for the variable level of education, the residents with higher education have more
knowledge regarding the content of the tanks. The variables work condition and
gender were not directly related to the perception of risk. On the other hand, the
variable income, respondents with incomes between 2 and 4 minimum wages perceive
with greater clarity the risks of the enterprise. In the time variable that resides in the
neighborhood, it was observed that the residents who live from 30 to 39 years are
more enlightened about the tanks. The research revealed that most of the residents
presented some perception regarding the risks attributed to the proximity of the
industrial enterprise in the community, however, it is clear that the enterprise does not
serve the interests of the community, but this is not a decision factor for the change of
place of residence by the residents.
